History Windham History

The town of Windham is located in east central Connecticut, southwest Windham County - "the quiet corner" of the state; covers 28 square miles; and has a population of approximately 21,810. The town was first settled in 1689 by "descendants of Norwich men who received the land as grants from Uncas' son Joshua" and incorporated in May 1692. The town's first church, Congregational, was organized on Dec. 10, 1700. Sections of the original town eventually became parts of other Windham County towns such as Hampton (known previously as Windham Village or Canada Society) incorporated 1786, Chapin incorporated 1822, Scotland incorporated 1857, and Mansfield (now in Tolland County) incorporated 1703. Today the Town of Windham consists of Windham (the original settlement), Willimantic, North Windham, and South Windham.

Jan (Wilson) Ramos has transcribed many of these documents as part of her genealogy research. Because so many unrelated individuals are mentioned, they may be of use to others. References may describe the location of a person's property, familial relationships, or a civil post. Most focus upon the geographic areas of Chaplin & Preston, Connecticut. They are presented in chronological order.
