A. (Connecticut Continental Troops) Eight Regiments for the Year 1775.

General and Staff Officers:

General Israel PUTNAM of Pomfret (Brooklyn Soc.). Appt. by the Legislature at the special April session, 1775, second Brigadier-General of the regts then order for “the safety and defence of the Colony”; also appt. Colonel of the 3d Regt, com’sn dated May 1, 1775. By order of the Legislature, his regt marched to the camp forming around Boston, and took post at Cambridge. Senior officer present and in command at Battle of Bunker Hill, June 17. Appt by Congress, June 19, Major-General on Continental establishment, superseding Wooster and Spencer. During siege of Boston, commanded center division of two brigades, Hd Qrs at Cambridge. Record cont in ’76 – Previous service: Captain and Major, French and Indian War; Lt. Col in expedition against Havana, 1762; Lieut. Col. of 11th Regiment Militia, at outbreak of Revolutionary War.

Israel PUTNAM, Jr. of Pomfret. Captain in Gen. Putnam’s regt. Appt. his Aid-de-Camp in Genl. Orders, July 29, ’75; probably served as such through the year. Eldest son of the General – died many years after the war, in Ohio.

Third Regiment – Gen. Putnam’s – 1775. Regiment raised on the first call for troops by the Legislature at special session of April-May, 1775. It was recruited in Windham County, with one Company from New London County, as indicated by the residences of the officers. Marching in May by companies to the camps forming around Boston, it was stationed during the siege in Putnam’s Center Division at Cambridge until expiration of term of service, Dec. 10, 1775. In July it was adopted as Continental. A detachment of the officers and men was engaged at Bunker Hill, as stated in the note on the battle appended to the last Company; a few men also joined the Quebec expedition. In re-enlisting troops for service in 1776, this regiment was re-organized with Benedict Arnold, then before Quebec, as Colonel.

B. (Connecticut Continental Troops) Eight Regiments for the Year 1776.

General and Staff Officers:

Major-General Israel PUTNAM of Pomfret. Cont. from ’75 as Maj. Gen. Continental Army. Served through the siege of Boston; instructed by Washington to proceed to New York in March, ’76, in advance of the troops and superintend the construction of works; fixed his Hd. Qrs. At No. 1 Broadway and commanded a division of two N.Y. brigades, under Gens. Clinton and Scott; ordered, Aug. 24, to relieve Gen. Sullivan of the command of the troops on the Brooklyn lines and present at battle of Long Island Aug. 27. On the retreat from N.Y., Sept. 15, he conducted the last regiments in the city safely to upper part of the Island; on Sept. 16, engaged in the successful “affair” of Harlem Heights; present at White Plains Oct. 28; joined in the retreat through New Jersey and on Dec. 9 was sent by Washington to arrange for the defence of Philadelphia. After the battle of Princeton, Jan. 3, ’77, he took post, with militia from Penn and N.J., at Princeton, Amboy and elsewhere while Washington occupied Morristown.—Record cont. in ’77, &c.

Daniel PUTNAM, of Pomfret. First Lieut. In Durkee’s Regt. Appt., Aid-De-Camp to his father, Gen. Putnam, probably succeeding his brother, Maj. Israel Putnam, Jr. –Record cont. in ’77. The exact date of Daniel Putnam’s appointment as Aid does not appear. He held that position on Jan. 1, ’77, and possibly through the greater part of ’76. No record has been found of his brother Israel’s service in ’76. One or the other was on his father’s staff during the year; the second Aid was Maj. Webb till June 21, when Aaron Burr was appointed.

C. (Connecticut Continental Troops) Eight Regiments of the “Continental Line,” with additional Infantry, Dragoons, and Artillery, for the Years 1777 to 1781.

General and Staff Officers:

Israel PUTNAM, Major-General, residence Pomfret. Maj. Gen. Continental army cont from ‘75-’76. Early in the summer of ’77 he assumed command of the new Continental regts arriving in Camp at Peekskill, and in the fall, with a limited force, endeavored to oppose the advance of the enemy up the Hudson. The retreat of the Americans with loss of forts and ships led to a Court of Inquiry in March, ’78. Gen. Putnam not held responsible in the case. In Jan. ’78, with Gov. Clinton and others, he selected West Point for fortification. Returning to Conn. in Feb. ’78, he furthered the enlistment of recruits, and in the summer reported at Washington’s new camp formed at White Plains after the battle of
Monmouth. By Genl orders, Sept. 7, ’78, assigned to the command of the Virginia “line” consisting of the Brigades of Woodford, Mublenberg, and Scott. In Oct., by Washington’s direction, he took command at West Point, and in the winter of ’78 – ’79 commanded the Conn. Division and other troops at Redding. In June, ’79, again reported to Washington and rec’d command of the right wing of the army at Smith’s Clove, west of the Hudson – the wing consisting of the Virginia, Maryland, and Penn. Divisions. When the army broke up for the winter ’79 – 80, Putnam made a visit to his home, but on returning to the main camp then fixed at Morristown, N.J., he rec’d a stroke of paralysis near Hartford, Dec. ’79, which incapacitated him for further service. Record cont in ’81.

Daniel PUTNAM, of Pomfret. Gen. Putnam’s second son and Aid-de-camp with rank of Major, probably continued from ’76, but served certainly, as per pay table accts from Jan. 1, ’77, to Jan. 1, ’80, when he retired with his father.

Thomas GROSVENOR, of Pomfret. Lieut-Colonel, 3rd Regt. “Conn. Line”; appt. July 11, ’79, Inspector of the Conn. Division. Record cont in ’81.

Samuel GRAY, of Windham. Appt. by Congress, Aug. 6, ’77, a second Dep. Com.-Gen. of Purchases for Eastern Dept. (mainly for Mass.), and cont. into 1780.

Royal FLINT, of Windham. Paymaster in Col. A. Ward’s Regt. ’76. Appt. May 28, ’77, by Conn. Council, Asst. Com. State troops; appt. by Congress, May 27, ’78, Asst Com of Purchases under Wadsworth, and stationed at Hd Qrs. Continental Army; at Valley Forge, ‘77-78, and Morristown Huts, ‘79-80; resigned Feb. ’80.
