FREDERICK HERSEY GRAVES was born March 20, 1860, in Bowdoinham, Maine, and is a son of James and Mary (Dunning) Graves.

James Graves was twice married, and mention of his children by his first wife, Martha Preble, may be found in the sketch of Washington Dane Graves. James Graves married for his second wife, Mary Dunning, the mother of Frederick Hersey Graves, in 1852. The birth of Mrs. Graves occurred in Harpswell, and she died in 1890, in Bowdoinham, Maine. To this marriage were born: James Clement, born Sept. 14, 1853, died February, 1901, in Dexter, Maine. He was a weaver by trade, who married (first) Priscilla Mains, and his second wife's name was Myra. William Johnson, born Aug. 16, 1855, is a farmer on the old homestead in Maine, and married Abbie Meriner. Mary Alice, born Jan. 28, 1857, resides in Nantucket, unmarried. Frederick Hersey is the subject of this sketch.

The education of Frederick Hersey Graves was obtained in his native town, and when he was sixteen he began to learn the trade of carpenter, at which he worked until February, 1894, when he removed to Stafford, in the village of Orcuttville. There he has since resided, and has become one of the most reliable and efficient carpenters and builders of that place. His own pleasant home in Orcuttville was erected by him in 1894, and is a good sample of what he is capable of accomplishing.

On May 24, 1894, Mr. Graves was married to Mary Hayden Preble, the daughter of Ervin W. and Eliza (Rogers) Preble, of Orcuttville, and no children have been born of this union.

Mr. Graves is connected with the K.P., Kennebec Lodge, No. 142, in Bowdoinham, Maine, and is also a member of the Manufacturers and Mechanics Lodge, No. 62, I.O.O.F., of Lewiston, Maine, and a member of the Masonic order, Village Lodge, No. 32, A.F. & A.M., of Bowdoinham, Maine. The church affiliations of Mr. Graves are with the Congregational Church of West Stafford, which he attends. In politics Mr. Graves is a staunch Republican.
