CLEVELAND FAMILY BIOGRAPHY AS RECORDED IN: COMMEMORATIVE BIOGRAPHICAL RECORD OF TOLLAND AND WINDHAM COUNTIES CONNECTICUT. BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES OF PROMINENT AND REPRESENTATIVE CITIZENS AND OF MANY OF THE EARLY SETTLED FAMILIES. PUBLISHER: J.H.BEERS & CO., CHICAGO; 1903 P. 925 CLEVELAND FAMILY. Moses Cleveland came from England and settled at Woban, Mass., about 1635, and Sept. 26, 1648, he married Ann Winn, and had seven sons and four daughters. These were: Moses, born Sept. 1, 1651, married Ruth Norton, and in 1687 moved to Marthas Vineyard; Hannah, born Aug. 4, 1653, married Thomas Hensher; Aaron, born Jan. 10, 1655, married Dorcas Wilson; Samuel, born June 9, 1657, came to Canterbury, Conn., in 1694, and married Margaret Fitch, July 25, 1699; Marian, born July 10, 1659, married a Mr. Fosdick, and lived at Charlestown, Mass.; Joannah, born Sept. 19, 1661, died July 2, 1667; Edward, born May 20, 1663, came to Canterbury, Conn., in 1716, and April 17, 1717, married Rebecca Payne, of Kingston, R.I. (He was the Hampton ancestor, and to his branch of the family belonged Hon. Chauncey F. Cleveland, who was Governor of Connecticut from 1842 to 1844); Josiah, born Feb. 26, 1667; Isaac, born May 11, 1669, married July 25, 1699, Elizabeth Curtis, and moved to Canterbury in 1701; Joannah, born April 5, 1670, became a Mrs. Keyes; and Enoch, born Aug. 1, 1671, died Jan. 9, 1702. Josiah Cleveland, son of Moses, was born in Woban, Mass., Feb. 26, 1667, and there married Mary Bates. In 1703 he moved to Canterbury and died April 26, 1709. His nine children were: Josiah, born Oct. 7, 1690; Joseph, born June 13, 1695; Henry, born 1697; Mary, born 1699; John; Rachel; Lydia, born in Canterbury, Dec.7, 1704; Deliverance, born July 13, 1707; and Abial, born Oct. 9, 1709. Josiah Cleveland (2), son of Josiah, was born in Woban, Mass., and Aug. 7, 1710, married Abigail Payne. Their children were: Keziah, born Nov. 16, 1711; Josiah, born April 4, 1713, died May 7, 1793; Abigail, born June 3, 1715, married Samuel Adams, and died Dec. 15, 1743; Elisha, born Jan. 7, 1717; Lois, born Dec. 11, 1718, died Sept. 9, 1736; Mary, born June 29, 1720; John, born April 17, 1722, graduated from Yale College 1745, became a member of the Congregational Church, and located in Massachusetts; Lydia, born Feb. 26, 1723, died March 26, 1745; Ebenezer, born Dec. 25, 1725, graduated from Yale College 1747; Aaron, born Nov. 27, 1727, was the father of Gen. Moses Cleveland, who founded the city of Cleveland, Ohio; and Moses, born April 18, 1730, died Jan. 1, 1741. Josiah Cleveland (3), son of
Josiah (2), was born April 4, 1713, in Canterbury, Conn., and married
Oct. 15, 1735, Sarah Lawrence. To this union were born: Asa, born
Aug. 4, 1736, died Dec. 19, 1810; Josiah, born Dec. 3, 1742, married
June 3, 1778, Alice Dyer, was a captain in the Revolutionary war
and died at Charlestown, Mass., June 28, 1843; Moses, born June
26, 1744; Mary, born Jan. 6, 1747; Lydia, born May 25, 1751, died
Sept. 30, 1754. Sarah Lawrence Cleveland died Feb. 6, 1755, and
Josiah s
second marriage was June 4, 1755, to Widow Joannah Brewster, daughter
of Edward and Thankful Waldo. She died April 4, 1803. Three children
were born to this marriage: Lydia, born Feb. 13, 1757, was married
Aug. 29, 1816, to a Mr. Phelps; Thankful, born Dec. 30, 1759, was
married Jan. 13, 1782, to Thaddeus Palmer; and Abigail, born Feb.
9, 1762, died May 21, 1838. She married (first), in Gilmanton, N.H.,
