March 4, 1997 --Stephen B. Nathan-- Seeking information about Ella Lee Stevens, born Norwich Nov, 1889, died circa 1985. She is buried in Yantic Cemetery. Her mother was Anna Hill. We think this is an old family because at her death a medal from the DAR was found. Also who has records for Yantic Cemetery?

24 Mar 1997--John B. Culver-- I am looking for information about the birth/baptismal record of George H. Culver, and who his parents were. George Henry Culver was born on April 18, 1833 to William Culver and his wife (name unknown), in the Town of Franklin, Connecticut, a few miles northwest of Norwich. (The Franklin Town Records do not document his birth. This information comes from other records, including the crews lists of whalers sailing out of New London which are held in the National Archives at Waltham, Mass.) According to his death record in Isabella County, Michigan (d. November 24, 1914), his father's name was William Culver of Connecticut. (The family was probably Methodist, and his father may have been a stonemason. Later, George would also work as farmer as well as a stonemason in Michigan, where he would build the foundation and first floors of barns.) George appears in the U.S. Census records for Norwich, Connecticut in 1850. At that time he was 16 years old and working on the farm of a Mr. James Rogers as a farm worker. The next record that appears for him was in 1851, when he was 17 years old. On June 30, 1851, he joined the crew of the whaling ship "Clematis", at New London. The Master of the ship was Mr. William Benjamin. The crews list for the "Clematis" also describes George H. Culver as being 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches tall and was of light complexion with light hair. The ship returned to port on May 8, 1853, and George H. Culver is listed again as having returned with the ship. The St. Mary's Parish records in Norwich (now located at St. Patrick's Cathedral)show that George H. Culver married an Irish immigrant, Mary Shea on April 27, 1856. This marriage is confirmed in the Norwich Town Records. They had one daughter, Maria H. Culver, (later in Michigan she is called Henrietta Culver), born to them on March 6, 1857. She was baptized two days later, on March 8, 1857, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. According to the 1857 Norwich City Directory, George H. Culver lived at 67 Thames W.S. and listed his occupation as a "mariner". Later in 1857 or in 1858, the young family moved to St. Joseph, Michigan. Either along the way, or in St. Joseph, Mary Shea Culver died. George Culver then married Elizabeth Rogene Williams on April 30, 1959. I have most of the Michigan information. My problem is to find out whether or not George H. Culver was baptized in the Methodist Church in Norwich or in Franklin, and which William Culver was his father. At this time, I do not think that the family were any longer Congregationalists, though they could have been. In Michigan, the George H. Culver family were Stonite Christians and later Methodists, not Catholics. Also, who was the mother of George H.Culver? According to family oral history, she apparently died when he was still in his early teenage years. George supposedly ran away from home when his father remarried, which might explain why he was living with the Rogers family as a farm worker in the Town of Norwich. If you should know these questions, please notify Rev. John B. Culver. e-mail: jbculver@flash.net
