#85 Babcock Cemetery (Hale Collection)

Directions: Northeast of Town Hall 5 1/2 miles Stones removed to River Bend Cemetery, Westerly, RI, May 1931, bodies still remain.

There is a small cemetery on the property of the Groton Sportsmen's Club, on the blue-blazed Narragansett Trail. The cemetery is currently free of overgrowth and has stone posts with iron bars and an iron gate. There is one headstone for Joshua P. Babcock. If I recall correctly, the stone is broken and I could not tell if there were more inscriptions. My guess is that, when the stones were moved, Joshua's stone was already broken or broken during the attempt to move it and it was left behind. I do not know if a new stone was carved and placed at the River Bend Cemetery. The GPS coordinates for the cemetery are:

41 degrees 30.604 minutes N
71 degrees 49.531 minutes W
Datum: WGS84

The cemetery is approximately 5.5 miles northeast of the old town hall, but the coordinates indicate that the plot is just a few feet within the Voluntown border
