The sepia photograph above was taken by
Asher Read in the 1920s for a photography contest, and it was featured
in the local newspaper. His great-granddaughter, Barbara
Rossitto, has shared the following biographical information about Asher
Read from her mother's notes:
Asher Nelson Read b 20 Oct 1864 Preston, New London, CT
d 10 Oct 1938 Rockville, Vernon, Tolland
Co., CT
Asher was accredited to be a TEACHER at Suffield Academy.
At an early age he enlisted in the MARINE CORPS. I have his discharge
papers
stating he was too young.
He was also a BOOKKEEPER in Rockville, CT., in one of the mills.
In later life he won the title of CHAMPION FIDDLER in local
competition, had
his picture in the Photogravure of the Hartford Courant..Each time we
children stopped in to visit him Grandpa would take out his fiddle and
play
a tune for us.
His hobby was PHOTOGRAPHY. One of his pictures of the Old Grist Mill in
New
London, CT won second place and was in the photogravure of the Hartford
Courant. (The sepia toned photograph) (The postcard is not his as
far as I
know, just something my mom had in her scrapbook, I don't think they
had
color photography back then)
